The new Audi A4 already hit US dealers, but Europeans are preparing themselves for the new TDI concept e which was introduced at the Paris Auto Show this week. The new technology enables the Audi sedan to achieve 58.95mpg!
It uses state-of-the art fuel saving technologies while also reducing emissions. The engine is a direct-injection TDI motor developing 120hp and 213.90 lb-ft of torque. With a decent 0-62mph acceleration of 10.7sec and 128mph top speed, the car should have no problem keeping up on the freeway. Improvements in the intake valves and thermal management system are key ingredients to helping the engine become more efficient.
The recuperation system is another fundamental component for improving fuel efficiency. It recovers power when braking and coasting to a stop, and temporarily stores it in a battery. A start-stop system switches the engine off when the vehicle comes to a standstill.
Magnesium was used to reduce the weight of the six-speed transmission, which received an insulating cover for faster warm-up and modified gear ratios.
